Frank Mantek (born January 20, 1959 in Jena ) is a former weightlifter and current sports director of the Federal Association of German Weightlifters .

Athletic career

Mantek's first international competition at the age of 21 was the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, which, as was customary at the time, also represented the world championships for that year. Here he was able to win the Olympic bronze medal with a performance of 370.0 kg (165.0 / 205.0 kg) in a duel in the medium heavyweight up to 90 kg. After David Rigert dropped out of the competition after three invalid attempts to tear at 170.0 kg and Rolf Milser was unable to participate due to the boycott of the western states, two of the actual title favorites in this weight class were already eliminated.

At the World Championships in 1981 in Lille, after 165.0 kg in the snatch, he could not bring in a valid attempt in the push and thus remained unplaced. In 1982 in Ljubljana he won the bronze medal in a duel with 377.5 kg (170.0 / 207.5 kg). The winner was Blagoj Blagojew with 415.0 kg ahead of Jurik Wardanjan with 395.0 kg.

Mantek played his last international competition in 1983 at the World Championships in Moscow, but he had to finish again without a place. At the age of 25, Mantek retired due to a shoulder injury.

Career as a coach

From 1990 to December 2012, Mantek was the sports director and national coach for men of the Federal Association of German Weightlifters . Among other things, he led Matthias Steiner to Olympic gold in the super heavyweight division in 2008. Since 2012 he has only been active as a sports director for the association at his own request; his successor as coach is Oliver Caruso .

Doping in the GDR

Mantek confessed to taking Oral-Turinabol during his active time as an athlete in the GDR. According to the doping expert Werner Franke , Mantek was "the second most doped person in GDR history" with a dose of 7600 milligrams per year.
