The Federal Association of German Weightlifters eV (BVDG) is the umbrella organization of German weightlifters.

history

The BVDG was founded in 1969 and recognized by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). According to the number of federal states, the BVDG was also divided into 16 subordinate associations, which maintain direct contact with the clubs and thus with the athletes. The BVDG ultimately goes back to the German Athletic Association (DAV), which was founded in 1891 and which was later renamed the German Athletic Sports Association (DASV). In addition, the Arbeiter-Athletenbund Deutschlands (AABD) was formed in 1905 and was banned in 1933. In the young Federal Republic of Germany, until the BVDG was founded, the interests of weightlifters were represented by the German Athletes' Association (DAB), which was established in 1949. At times, the BVDG's interest group also included powerlifting .

In the GDR , the German Weightlifting Association (DGV) was founded on April 27, 1958, which was also responsible for weight training and bodybuilding . Its regional associations joined the BVDG on September 30, 1990, the weight training and bodybuilding divisions had already been spun off and formed what was then the German weight training and bodybuilding association.
