Almir Velagic (born August 22, 1981 in Livno , SFR Yugoslavia , today Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is a German weightlifter .

Career

Almir Velagic, a native Bosnian , started lifting weights at AC Kaufbeuren in 1992 . For the club he also started in individual competitions until mid-2009, but then switched to AV 03 Speyer . The super heavyweight has also competed for the SV Germania Obrigheim team since 2006 , before he started for the AC Forst . Until 2004 Velagic competed in the heavyweight up to 105 kg, but then switched to the super heavyweight over 105 kg due to stagnating performance. The sports soldier belongs to the sports promotion company of the Bundeswehr in Bruchsal .

At the 2005 World Cup, Velagic reached eleventh place, eighth place in 2006 and twelfth in 2007. He finished sixth at the 2007 European Championships. In 2005, 2006 and 2007 Velagic was also German champion in the super heavyweight over 105 kg. With a strong performance at the Adriatic Alpine Cup in 2008, he qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , where he finished eighth with 413 kg (188 kg tearing and 225 kg pushing ) and at the same time set a personal best.

At the European Championships in Bucharest in 2009 , Velagic won the bronze medal in snatching behind Shymechko and Pisarev with a new personal best of 190 kg, as well as bronze in pushing with 228 kg and silver in a duel with 418 kg behind Shymechko with 433 kg. At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 he reached eighth place in the weight class over 105 kg .

At the European Championships in 2014 , Velagic won bronze in a duel. At the European Championships in 2015 he was first fourth in the duel and in the snatch. After the doping transfer of Oleg Proshak Velagic received two bronze medals.
