Harald Büttner (born April 13, 1953 in Meißen ) is a former German wrestler from the GDR. He became world and European champion.
Career
Harald Büttner grew up in Meißen ( Saxony ). He was very athletic and initially occupied himself with weightlifting - Meißen was a weightlifting stronghold in GDR times - and rowing . In the end he ended up wrestling and in 1970 was the second winner in his weight class at the GDR children's and youth party. He was noticed by a trainer working in the Luckenwalde wrestling center , Wolfgang Brösicke, who caused Harald Büttner to go to SG Dynamo Luckenwalde . There he made rapid progress with targeted training and started in 1973 for the first time at the World and European Championships. He surprised at the European Championships with a third place in the heavyweight class. Until 1980 he then competed regularly at the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships. His greatest successes were the world championship title in 1978 and the European championship title in 1974. A medal win at the Olympic Games in 1976 and 1980 was denied him. Whereby especially the 4th place in Moscow hurt when he lost after four victories in a row against the outsider Strnisko from the CSSR and had to retire. His victories over the unbeatable Soviet athletes Ivan Jarygin , Levan Tediaschwili and Vladimir Gulutkin and Olympic champion Benjamin Peterson , USA, were remarkable . However , he couldn't get past Aslanbek Bisultanow and Ilya Fyodorowitsch Mate , also wrestlers from the Soviet Union.
Harald Büttner now lives in Berlin .
