Roland Schröder (rower)

Roland Schröder (born August 17, 1962 in Koethen ) is a former rower from the GDR . In 1988 Schröder became Olympic champion in the four-man category without a helmsman .

In 1979, Schröder was second in the double scull and double scull at the Spartakiad . In 1980 he won the double sculls at the Junior World Championships together with Thomas Lange . In 1983 Schröder won the GDR championship with the four without the SC Chemie Halle , in 1984 and 1985 he took second place. In 1988, Schröder moved to Thomas Greiner , Ralf Brudel and Olaf Förster for Jens Luedecke in the GDR foursome, which had become world champions in 1987. At the 1988 Olympic Games, Förster, Brudel, Greiner and Schröder won in front of the boats from the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1989 Luedecke returned to the foursome; Schröder switched to the GDR eighth , with which he took second place behind the boat from the Federal Republic of Germany at the World Championships in Bled. At the last appearance of the GDR national rowing team at the 1990 World Cup in Tasmania, Schröder took third place with the GDR eight, after he had previously won the last GDR championship title with the eight.

For the Olympic gold medal in 1988 in Seoul, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold.

Schröder married the Dresden rower Heike Winkler . The trained electrician sold large kitchens after the fall of the Wall .
