John Sayre

John Anthony Sayre (born April 1, 1936 in Tacoma , Washington ) is a retired American rower and Olympic champion.

John Sayre studied at the University of Washington , where he rowed for the University Team Huskies and for the Lake Washington Rowing Club . The 1.93 m tall Sayre won the 1959 Pan American Games in a four-man team with Ted Nash , Richard Wailes and Jay Hall. The next year Arthur Ayrault moved on for Jay Hall. At the 1960 Olympic Games, the American four-man without a helmsman was defeated by the British in the run-up and only qualified for the final via the hope run . In the final, the Americans won by two and a half seconds ahead of the team from the host country Italy, which had also only reached the final via the repechage.
