The 2.03 m tall O'Brien formed in 1984 together with Conrad Robertson , Keith Trask and Les O'Connell the New Zealand foursome; the other three had won the world championship title in the four with helmsman the previous year together with Gregory Johnston and helmsman Brett Hollister . Of the medal winners at the 1983 World Championships , the 1984 four without a helmsman were the West German World Champions and the Swedish Third, only the Russian Vice World Champions were absent because of the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries. In the first heat, the New Zealanders won by one second over the Germans, the third-placed Danes were six seconds behind the Germans at the finish. In the final, the New Zealanders rose by almost five seconds, they won by over two seconds ahead of the US boat and the Danes, while the German world champions only achieved fourth place.

With Tong Ross for Conrad Robertson, the New Zealand foursome finished fourth at the 1985 World Championships . At the 1986 World Championships , O'Brien rowed in eighth, who achieved seventh place overall as the winner of the B final.
