The skull has a total length of 22 to 28 millimeters. It's built short. The zygomatic arch is fully developed, in the middle part a branch points backwards and, viewed from the side, ends in front of the eye socket. The tympani are large and reach far behind the occiput . Like all jerboas owned pets in the maxilla per half an an incisor tooth trained incisors (incisive) to which a tooth gap ( diastema follows). This is followed by a premolar and three molars . In contrast, the animals do not have a premolar in the lower jaw. In total, the animals have a set of 18 teeth.

distribution

The Kozlov three-toed jumping vole is found in northwest China and Mongolia . In the People's Republic of China, it is recorded in the north and south of Xinjiang , the west of Inner Mongolia , Ningxia and the northwest of Gansu and Shaanxi . In Mongolia it occurs in the Trans-Altai-Gobi, the Alashani-Gobi and the Eastern Gobi.

Way of life

The Kozlov three-toed gerbil lives in dry and sandy regions with a vegetation of tamarisk and saxaul . The species feeds mainly on green parts of plants and seeds, but it also eats insects. The animals are nocturnal, more rarely also crepuscular. The breeding season is from April to May, the females have a litter with three to five young.

Systematics

The Kozlov three-toed jump mouse is classified as an independent species within the genus of the three-toed jump mouse ( Salpingotus ), which consists of six species. The first scientific description comes from Boris Vinogradow from 1922, who described the species using individuals from the region around Chara-Choto in the Gobi of Inner Mongolia. He named the species after the Russian explorer Pyotr Koslow , who excavated the Chara-Choto ruins on the Mongolia-Sichuan expedition from 1908 to 1909.

Status, threat and protection

The Kozlov three-toed jumping vole is classified as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This is justified by the relatively large distribution area, the assumed large populations and the occurrence in several protected areas.
