biography

Zesner trained at SV Dynamo Cottbus from 1975 before moving to Luckenwalde in 1979 . He later swam for SC Dynamo Berlin . For the GDR he took part in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , where he won silver in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay together with Uwe Daßler , Sven Lodziewski and Thomas Flemming , as well as over 4 × 100 m freestyle with Dirk Richter and Thomas Flemming and Lars Hinneburg bronze. The latter succeeded four years later at the 1992 Summer Olympics from Barcelona again, this time for the united Germany in the occupation with Dirk Richter, Christian Troeger and Mark Pinger . As early as 1991 he had become world champion in the 4 × 200 m freestyle together with Peter Sitt , Stefan Pfeiffer and Michael Groß .

In 1997 Zesner stated that he had received " these blue pills " from his supervisor at the time, Gerd Eßer , as part of the state-prescribed doping in GDR competitive sports. But instead of swallowing it, he collected it and "returned it to the trainer later".

In the 1996 Olympic Games of Atlanta won Zesner once again a bronze medal with the 4 x 200 m relay.

He was awarded the silver bay leaf for his athletic achievements .

After the European Championships in 1995, where he won the individual title over 400 m freestyle, Zesner fell seriously ill with kidney stones . Due to his relationship with swimmer Franziska van Almsick , Zesner was very much in the public eye at that time, which in 1996 led to a conflict with the Federal Constitutional Court with the magazine das neue quickly and up-to-date , which had reported about an upcoming "dream wedding" and now an appropriate one had to print a clearly placed reply .

For winning medals in Seoul in 1988, Zesner was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Zesner operates Zesner Sportberatung , which was founded in 1995 for self- marketing purposes and which has dedicated itself exclusively to event management since 1998.
