With the III. Olympics 1904 in St. Louis found two competitions in weightlifting instead. The venue was the Francis Field Stadium , parallel to the athletics competitions (the division into heavy and athletics that is common today did not exist at the time).

In this competition ten different exercises had to be done with one arm. The first nine exercises were rated for weight lifted (5 for the first, 3 for the second, and 1 for the third). The tenth exercise was a " freestyle " in which the judges gave a maximum of 25 points to all athletes.

The winner Perikles Kakousis proved to be superior and won by more than 27 kg over Oscar Osthoff. Dimitrios Tofalos, who later won the interludes in 1906, was also registered as a participant, but fell ill on the outward journey and did not compete.
