Frank Xaver Kugler (or: Kungler ) (born March 29, 1879 - † July 7, 1952 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was a German athlete living in the USA who won a silver at the 1904 Summer Olympics in his adopted home town of St. Louis - and won three bronze medals. In 1913 he became a US citizen.

Career

Frank Kugler, who was born in the German Empire , was a member of the Southwest Gymnastics Club of St. Louis in St. Louis , an association to which primarily German-born Americans such as Max Braun , August Rodenberg and Oscar Friede (all three also medal winners at the 1904 Olympics) belonged . Kugler's disciplines included wrestling and weightlifting . At the 1904 Summer Olympics, he won a silver medal in wrestling (freestyle, heavyweight), two bronze medals in weightlifting (in two-armed all-around and one-armed all-around) and a bronze medal in the tug of war with the second team of his club. With it he won Olympic medals in three different sports. Contrary to various statements, according to which Kugler was an American in 1904, he is officially listed as a German Olympian, and the bronze medal team in the tug of war is officially referred to as a mixed team (USA / Germany) due to his participation . According to this information, Kugler did not become a US citizen until 1913. Kugler's medals (three for Germany, one for mixed team ) are therefore wrongly assigned to the US Olympic team in most medal tables.
