With the III. Olympics 1904 in St. Louis found seven competitions in wrestling instead. The venue for the competitions on October 14th and 15th was the infield of Francis Field Stadium .

Wrestling took place in free style for the first time, after the Greco-Roman style was used in Athens in 1896 and wrestling was not part of the program in Paris in 1900. Although the 42 participating wrestlers were all US-Americans, the competitions are still considered Olympic because amateurs from all countries would have been eligible to participate. The fights usually lasted six minutes. If no decision was made during this time, there was a three-minute extension (six minutes in the final). Third place was automatically the one who had lost in the first preliminary round to the eventual Olympic champion.
