With the III. In the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , a basketball competition was held. Whether the tournament had Olympic status is disputed. It was advertised as the "Olympic World's Basket Ball Championships", but only American teams competed. In addition, basketball was only widespread in the United States at the time, and very likely not played in any other country. The game was played in the infield of the Francis Field stadium and in the adjacent gym.
