István Messzi (born June 29, 1961 in Kiskunfélegyháza , † May 9, 1991 in Katalinpuszta ) was a Hungarian weightlifter .

Career

Messzi's first international appearances were the 1985 World Championships in Södertälje and 1986 in Sofia . With a duel performance of 345.0 kg (160.0 / 185.0 kg) or 340.0 kg (155.0 / 185.0 kg) in the middleweight range up to 75 kg, he finished 5th and 6th respectively .

For the 1987 World Championship in Ostrava , Messzi switched to the light heavyweight up to 82.5 kg and was able to take fifth place in the duel again with 370.0 kg (165.0 / 205.0 kg). The winner was Laszlo Barsi with 390.0 kg, ahead of Sergej Li with 382.5 kg and Assen Slatew with 375.0 kg.

Since the level of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul in the light heavyweight category up to 82.5 kg could not match that of the previous World Championships, Messzi won the silver medal with 370.0 kg (170.0 / 200.0 kg) in a duel . This achievement had not been sufficient for reaching a podium place at any world championship in the Olympic cycle from 1984 to 1988. The winner was Israil Arsamakow with 377.5 kg, Lee Hyung-Keun took third place with 367.5 kg.

After the Olympic Games, Messzi returned to the middleweight category up to 75 kg, in which he weighed 332.5 kg (152.5 / 180.0 kg) at the 1989 World Cup in Athens and 330.0 kg (152.5 / 177 , 5 kg) at the EM 1990 in Aalborg but could not achieve any more success. His last international competition was at the 1990 World Championships in Budapest , where after three invalid attempts in snatching with 150.0 kg, he stopped pushing.

Messzi died in a car accident in 1991 at the age of 29. The Messzi István sports hall in Kecskemét was named after him in his honor.
