At the XXI. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal , archery competitions were held for men and women.

As in the archery tournament at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, a so-called double FITA round was shot as part of the competition . While the distance for the men’s 2 x 36 arrows was 90 m, 70 m, 50 m and 30 m, the women had to shoot at a distance of 70 m, 60 m, 50 m and 30 m.

At the 1976 Games, Darrell Pace was able to win the first of his two Olympic gold medals in singles. In the second round he also achieved a new Olympic record with 1307 rings.
The Federal Republic of Germany was represented by Willi Gabriel and Rudolf Schiff . Gabriel got a good sixth and Schiff 27th. Oswald Probst competed for Austria and finished the tournament in 33rd place. Starters from Switzerland did not take part in the tournament.

The American Luann Ryon achieved a new Olympic record with 1282 rings in the second round.
The Federal Republic of Germany was represented by Maria Urban , who achieved a good eighth place. After the first of the two rounds, Urban was still on a medal rank with second place, but she was only able to finish the second round in 15th. Starters from Austria or Switzerland did not take part in the tournament.
