József Vértesy (born February 19, 1901 in Sombor , Serbia , † December 21, 1983 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian water polo player.

Vértesy first took part in the water polo tournament of the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, where he was defeated in the quarterfinals with the Hungarian national team with 2: 7 to the Belgian. Four years later, at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, they first beat Argentina, America and France before they met Germany in the final and after a 2: 5 defeat only won the silver medal. In four games, Vértesy scored nine goals.

At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Hungary faced America and Japan and then again in the final against Germany. The revenge was successful and Vértesy won after a 6-2 win, in which he scored three goals, with his team- mates György Bródy , Sándor Ivády , Olivér Halassy , Márton Homonnay , János Németh , István Barta , Alajos Keserű , Miklós Sárkády and Feren the gold medal.
