The swimming club Blau-Weiß Bochum from 1896 eV in Bochum is one of the largest swimming clubs in Germany with over 6000 members (as of May 2018) and is the second largest sports club in Bochum.

With its own swimming pool, the association offers its members sports activities in grassroots, leisure and competitive sports. The core sports include swimming , water polo and triathlon .

Foundation of an association

The association was founded on March 16, 1896 in the upper hall of the city theater by 35 founding members. A swimming show by the Rhenish-Westphalian Swimmer Association, accompanied by a band, took place the day before. The then Lord Mayor Karl Hahn , Mayor Lange and City Planning Officer Hermann Bluth also joined the association to support it. As early as October 1896, the club was accepted into the swimmers' union and regularly took part in the canal swimming festival in Herne . The main base of the association was Marienbad, a bathing establishment built in 1894 on Marienstrasse, which was destroyed in World War II.

The club's own swimming pool

A year-round swimming pool can be found in the midst of the Bochum Wiesental. In the period after the Second World War, an outdoor swimming pool measuring 50 × 15 m was built using our own resources. Around 1950 they owned a swimming pool, a children's pool, a 2½-storey house for a restaurant as well as a changing room and technical building. In 1979 a new basin measuring 50 × 25 m was completed. In the mid-1990s, the lawns could also be expanded by leasing areas from the Wiesental green corridor . An air dome above the main pool has allowed winter operation since 2013.

Popular sport

With a wide range of popular sports from learning to swim for adults to technical training for everyone , the club offers a wide range of sports in and around the water.

The club area is also used for beach volleyball .

competitive sport

The club achieved some success in swimming and water polo . Since the first title in water polo in 2000, the women's water polo team from Blau-Weiß has been at the top in Germany and has won twelve championships in a row. The team also won the water polo cup nine times. The swimmers regularly take part in all championships organized by the DSV . Heli Houben is one of the longstanding successful swimmers .

The swimming department of SV Blau-Weiß Bochum also holds its own competitions with an international starting field with the Wiesental Cup and the Bochum Cup.
