Tour of Belgium 1959

Armand Desmet (born January 23, 1931 in Waregem ; † November 17, 2012 there ) was a Belgian racing cyclist .

Armand Desmet was a professional from 1955 to 1967, for many years as an assistant to Rik Van Looy . In 1958 he won the first edition of E3 Harelbeke , and the following year he won the Tour of Belgium . In 1960 he was second in the Vuelta a España and decided together with Frans De Mulder and Arthur De Cabooter the team classification for his team. In 1961 he won a stage from Paris – Nice and one of the Tour of Belgium, where he finished second in the overall standings. In 1962 he won around the Henninger Tower , and in 1964 he won a stage of the Vuelta. At the UCI Road World Championships in 1963 , he finished 18th.

Desmet started eight times in the Tour de France . He reached Paris five times, his best placing was fifth overall in 1963 . In 1958 he was 33rd, in 1959 23rd, 1960 42nd, and in 1962 he was 16th overall. He drove the Giro d'Italia twice and finished the Giro in 1962 in tenth overall.
