Michel Dernies (born January 6, 1961 in Nivelles , Walloon Brabant Province ) is a former professional Belgian cyclist and later sports director . He was active as a professional from 1983 to 1995.
Career
Dernies turned professional at Fangio in 1983 and in his first year he finished third at the Belgian road racing championships and second at the Flèche Hesbignonne . In 1985 he finished second in the Tour de Suisse and fifth in the Grand Prix de Wallonie and took part in the Tour de France for the first time . At the Grand Prix de Wallonie he finished second in 1986 and again took part in the Tour de France.
He celebrated his first major successes with second place at Liège – Bastogne – Liège and his victory in the 1988 round of Henninger Turm .
His most successful year was in 1990, where, in addition to his victories, he also took second place in Paris-Brussels and Grand Prix de Wallonie and was sixth in the Wincanton Classic . In the following years he could not achieve any results worth mentioning and ended his career at the end of the 1995 season. In total, Dernies took part in major country tours twelve times.
From 1994 Dernies was councilor for sport and youth in Tubize , province of Walloon Brabant . In 2009 he resigned from office on allegations of embezzlement.
From 2011 he was the sporting director of the Wallonie Bruxelles-Crédit Agricole team . He has been working for the Roubaix Métropole européene de Lille team since 2016 .

His son Tom Dernies is also a cyclist and will ride for the Natura4Ever-Roubaix Lille Métropole team in 2020 .
