Matteo Tosatto (born May 14, 1974 in Castelfranco Veneto , Veneto ) is a former Italian cyclist and later sports director . He was considered one of the most reliable domestics in road cycling .
Career
Matteo Tosatto began his career in 1997 with the MG-Technogym cycling team . There he took part in the Tour de France in his first year . In 1998 he moved to Ballan and drove there for two years before joining Fassa Bortolo . There he first won a stage near Paris – Nice , finished second in Rund um den Henninger-Turm and rode three days in the Maglia Rosa at the Giro d'Italia 2000 . The following year he won a stage.
In 2002 Tosatto won the Italian one-day race Coppa Placci . In the 2004 season he won the Giro di Toscana and the GP Canton Aargau . In 2005 he finished second in the prologue to the Giro d'Italia . From 2006 to 2010 Tosatto drove for the Belgian ProTeam Quick Step . In the very first year he achieved his greatest success to date: He won the 18th stage of the Tour de France .
In 2011 Tosatto moved to the Danish team Saxo Bank , where he was to act as "Capitaine de route" and to bring his experience to the team during races. In this role he was involved in the success of Alberto Contador in his victories at the Giro d'Italia 2011 - later revoked due to a subsequent doping ban - and at the Vuelta a España 2012 .
After his team ceased operations at the end of the 2016 season and Tosatto's plan to switch to Trek-Segafredo together with Contador failed, he announced in December 2016 at the age of 42 that he would end his career as an active athlete.
In July 2017, Tosatto became Sports Director at Team Sky .
