The 7th Germany Tour took place from August 15th to 23rd, 2005 . It was held in nine stages over a distance of 1,529.7 kilometers.

With the newly created UCI ProTour , the tour no longer started at the beginning of June, but in the middle of August. In addition, the tour was extended by two more stages to make the race more attractive.

From August 17, there was a general event accompanying the Deutschland Tour : The Giant Tour ran over seven stages - each between 30 and 105 kilometers had to be mastered.

course

The most difficult stage was that from Kufstein to Sölden , the route of which lay entirely in Austria . After crossing the Kühtai (2,017 m), the final ascent was 10% steep on average from Sölden to the Rettenbachferner . The target was at an altitude of 2,684 meters; this was also the highest mountain finish of the UCI ProTour 2005 . Other difficult sections were the fifth stage with the Arlbergpass (1,793 m), as well as the seventh stage with the Notschrei (1,119 m) and the mountain arrival on the Feldberg (1,280 m).

Already on the first stage Bram Tankink reached the finish as a soloist and secured the yellow jersey. The sprinters Filippo Pozzato and Daniele Bennati were able to decide in their favor on the following stages . On the fourth stage, the American Levi Leipheimer from the Gerolsteiner team laid the foundation for his overall victory when he was able to break away from his teammates Georg Totschnig and Jan Ullrich on the final climb, the Rettenbachferner , and won. On the next two stages Bennati again won the sprint of the main field and Maxim Iglinski with a breakaway attempt. On the seventh stage up to the Feldberg, Leipheimer manifested his top position. In the following individual time trial Ullrich was able to beat Leipheimer for the first time, but his lead of 55 seconds was not enough to snatch victory from him. As it turned out later, Ullrich won despite a wrongly mounted front wheel. Bennati won for the third time on the final stage.
