The international Afri-Cola Germany Tour , a predecessor of the later Germany Tour , took place from April 28 to May 4, 1961 . It led from Cologne back to Cologne over 1,484.5 kilometers. The tour was held in eight stages, including an individual time trial . There was also a 44 kilometer long criterion in Kellmünz , which, however, was not included in the overall ranking.

59 drivers took part in eleven international company teams. 42 starters reached the finish line, with the winner covering the distance with an hourly average of 36.702 km / h.

Friedhelm Fischerkeller secured the tour victory with his victory on the first stage. Horst Oldenburg couldn't change anything with his four stage wins and finished the tour as 15th in the final ranking. The trip was overshadowed by the death of the Italian Alessandro Fantini , who fell on the sixth stage on arrival in Trier and died of serious injuries two days later.
