Alessandro Fantini

Alessandro Fantini (born January 1, 1932 in Fossacesia ; † May 5, 1961 in Trier ) was an Italian cyclist .

Alessandro Fantini became a professional racing driver in 1954 ; he was a sprint specialist. In his first year as a professional, he finished second in the overall ranking of the Giro delle Puglie e Lucania . In 1955 and 1956 he won two stages of the Giro d'Italia , and in 1956 also a stage of the Tour de France . Also in 1957 he won two stages of the Giro , one more in 1959 .

In 1960 Fantini started the international Afri-Cola Germany Tour , a predecessor of the Germany Tour, and won two stages. The following year he started again at the Tour of Germany and won the fourth stage. On the sixth stage from Landau to Trier , he fell in the mass sprint shortly before the finish and suffered a fractured skull. He was immediately hospitalized, but surgery was not possible because of the large amount of amphetamines in his body. He died two days later.

The Alessandro Fantini GP has been held in Fantini's hometown of Fossacesia every year since the year he died .
