Lock type: | Earthfill dam |
The Spaulding Pond is a reservoir on the river Yantic at Mohegan Park in the city of Norwich in Connecticut , USA. On March 6, 1963, the dam broke and caused a tidal wave that killed 6 people and caused property damage of 6 million dollars.
A crack in the earth dam was the trigger for the disaster that happened that night. The tidal wave ("Great Flood of Norwich"), which also contained massive ice floes, inundated houses, streets and cars in the business district of the city and caused a mill to collapse.
Remains of the old dam can still be seen on the southern shore of the lake.
