The 4th Germany Tour took place from June 3rd to 9th, 2002 . It ran from Wiesbaden over 1,150.8 kilometers to Stuttgart through southern Germany. 188 drivers from 19 professional teams started for the first time, but only 77 of them made it to the finish.
For the first time since the new edition of the tour in 1999 , it did not take place at the same time as the Giro d'Italia . In addition, a more mountainous profile was chosen compared to previous years and a team rating was introduced.
course
Erik Zabel already showed his class with two victories on the first two stages, underscoring the supremacy of Team Telekom in Germany. On the third stage, which led over the Kandel , the Coast team attacked and promptly won with Aitor Garmendia , who also took over the lead from Zabel. In the individual time trial that followed , the wearer changed again. However, not stage winner Michael Rich , but Igor González de Galdeano put it on and did not give it up until the end of the tour. The other victories of the day went to Zabel on the fifth and seventh stages, as well as Stéphane Augé , who was able to prevail out of a leading group that was more than eleven minutes ahead of the finish line. The field was not very enthusiastic about the cold weather conditions in the Alps and thus dashed the hopes of the organizers for an exciting part of the day that would change the overall ranking again.
