The Großdeutschlandfahrt , a predecessor of today's Germany Tour , took place from June 1st to June 24th, 1939 . It led from Berlin over 5,049.6 kilometers back to Berlin. The tour was thus longer than the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia and, with the annexation of Austria , offered the National Socialists the opportunity to demonstrate the size of the empire.

There were 68 drivers from twelve teams, four of them from abroad. 41 starters reached the finish line, with the winner covering the distance at an hourly average of 33.762 km / h.

For the first time there was a yellow jersey in the style of the big model, the Tour de France. In addition, the organizer Hermann Schwartz introduced a mountain and a team classification.

The winner of the tour, Georg Umbenhauer , secured the yellow jersey in the finish sprint on the fifth stage and did not give it up until Berlin. He started the second edition of the Tour in 1922 at the age of 14 ½ years. Last year's winner Hermann Schild could not endanger Umbenhauer despite four stage victories and finished the tour in 30th place.

The Swiss Robert Zimmermann won the first mountain classification . The team classification was also entirely in foreign hands. The four teams from Belgium , France , Switzerland and a mixed team from the Netherlands , Denmark and Spain took the first four places in that order.
