geography

Geographical location

Ewattingen, behind it the Wutach Gorge and the Baar

Wutach is located on the north-eastern border of the Waldshut district. The Black Forest is to the west and the Randen to the east . The municipality extends from 592 to 850 meters in height.

Neighboring communities

In the north and northeast, the district boundary also represents the district boundary to the districts of Schwarzwald-Baar and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald . In the south, the municipality borders on the town of Stühlingen and in the east on the town of Bonndorf in the Black Forest .

Community structure

The municipality of Wutach consists of the formerly independent municipalities of Ewattingen (793 inhabitants on June 30, 2011), Lembach (183 inhabitants) and Münchingen (248 inhabitants). The village of Ewattingen, the farms Bachtalmühle, Bruderhof and Wutachmühle and the Gipsmühle house belong to the former municipality of Ewattingen. Only the villages of the same name belong to the former communities of Lembach and Münchingen.

In the territory of the former municipality Ewattingen lying Outbound Castle Göggel mountain and deserted villages Weschdorf and Mill Began. The latter is probably identical to the village of Wilolvingen, which was first mentioned in a document in 1293 and later abandoned.

history

The municipality shows traces of very early settlement. In Ewattingen and Lembach, for example, there are remains from the Urnfeld culture (around 1200 BC), but also from the Hallstatt period (800 BC). These are burial mound fields . Some of them are still in very good condition. Coin finds prove that people settled in what is now the municipality of Wutach as far back as Roman times. Due to the migration of peoples and the Germanic conquest , the Alemanni settled . With the mention of Ekipetingum in a donation by Gotzberg to the St. Gallen monastery in May 816 under the rule of Count Erchanger , the name of the place Ewattingen appears in writing for the first time. The spelling then changed several times, including the names Ebgetingen and Egbotingen .

In 1418 the place came into the possession of the Benedictine monastery of St. Blasien . There was a castle-like building in the village, which was converted into the St. Blasianisches Amtshaus and still stands today as the "Amtshaus" in the center of the village. With the secularization and the dissolution of the monastery, Ewattingen comes to the Grand Duchy of Baden .

Until the end of the Second World War , Wutach was structured purely on a rural basis. However, since agriculture could no longer adequately supply all residents in the 19th century, the residents began to flee. Many emigrated to America . A larger wave of refugees began after the fire disaster of 1875, which destroyed almost half of the houses and the church. Numerous urban refugees found their livelihood in the emerging industry .

This development came to a brief end with the beginning of the First World War . This was also due to the establishment of so-called additional businesses in today's municipality of Wutach and smaller factories in the immediate vicinity. Immediately after the Second World War, the community was able to benefit little from the emerging tourism . Over the decades, however, this changed fundamentally.

On January 1, 1975, the municipality of Wutach was created through the voluntary amalgamation of the formerly independent political communities of Ewattingen, Lembach and Münchingen.

religion

The former Catholic parish of Ewattingen with the Münchingen branch church is now part of the Bonndorf-Wutach pastoral care unit .

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved by the district on November 11, 1980.

Blazon : “In a split shield; in front a red-tongued blue lion in silver, behind in blue a silver wave pole. "

On January 1, 1975, Ewattingen, Lembach and Münchingen merged to form a municipality, which was given the name of this river because of its location on the Wutach, which borders the municipality in the north and east. The coat of arms of the new municipality is based on the coat of arms of the former municipality of Ewattingen, which was adopted in 1903 at the suggestion of the General State Archives and corresponds to the coat of arms of the Ewattingen local nobility attested from the 13th to 15th centuries: in a shield split in silver and blue at the front blue lion. With the wave stake inserted in the rear field of the Ewattingen coat of arms, which symbolizes the name and the topography of the community, this coat of arms has been adapted to the new circumstances.

The flag is striped blue and white.

Culture and sights

Buildings

St. Gallus Church

High altar Ewattingen

Martinskirche is mentioned as the first church. Over the centuries the patronage of the church must have changed and it was consecrated to St. Gall . The current building and especially the tower go back to a new building in 1595, which was destroyed only a few years later by a conflagration. In 1608 the St. Blasian Abbot Martin Meister consecrated today's church building. The tower bears the year 1595, the sacristy door 1606 and the year 1606 and 1608 can be found on two keystones . The church has a rib vaulted vestibule as a rarity. The nave is flat-roofed and has Gothic windows. The choir contains a Gothic cross rib vault with three keystones. The first one bears the inscription: Built in 1606, the second: 1st fire in 1792 and the third: 2nd fire in 1875. The trisection of the lower half of the striking high altar still reveals the origins of the late Gothic winged altar, while the columns and the crowning of the However, altars correspond to the stylistic characteristics of Renaissance art. The middle picture shows the adoration of the Christ child by the three wise men in relief. The side parts contain the four evangelists in medallions : Luke above left , John below , Matthew above right , Mark below . The upper relief contains a coronation of Mary, the decorative side parts, on the left the coat of arms of St. Blasien, while the coat of arms on the right is empty. The figures of St. Blasius and St. Benedict , the patron saint of St. Blasien and the founder of the order of the local monastery and as a crown a statue of St. Gallus, the church patron, surrounded by two angels.

Economy and Infrastructure

Industrial development and resident companies

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ewattingen was characterized purely by agriculture and craft. This also includes gypsum extraction , the beginnings of which are mentioned as early as 1732.

From the 1920s to 1962, gypsum was broken at the Wutachmühle and up to 20 people found employment in the small plaster works. After the Second World War, the gravel works opened up another line of business, which has since been given up. When the Dunkermotoren company settled in Bonndorf in 1955, a branch was established in Ewattingen, which was taken over by the Revox company in 1968, initially for their motor and later loudspeaker production. With the sale of the Revox company, these jobs were lost. The former production facilities are now used by the companies Dunkermotoren and Hectronic as conference and storage rooms.

Today in Ewattingen there are still farms, a cider factory, various craft businesses and inns. Due to the nearby Wutach Gorge natural monument , tourism is another important economic factor in the community.

traffic

Ewattingen is on the L 171 regional road . Südbadenbus GmbH offers a bus connection from Bonndorf to Donaueschingen via Ewattingen. There are also connections to the Wutach Gorge (Bonndorf, Schattenmühle, Boll and Wutachmühle) in the summer months via the hiking bus.

Public facilities

The primary school and kindergarten for all three districts as well as an indoor swimming pool are located in the district of Ewattingen .
