geography

location

Herrischried is located on the Vorderen Hotzenwald , a southern branch of the Black Forest near the High Rhine .

Community structure

The municipality of Herrischried included the municipalities Großherrischwand, Hogschür, Hornberg , Niedergebisbach, Rütte and Wehrhalden, which were independent until the 1970s . The village Großherrischwand and the house Jägerhaus (Jägersruhe) belong to the former municipality of Großherrischwand. The villages of Herrischried and Lochmatt and the hamlets of Mühle, Säge and Stehle belong to the municipality of Herrischried in the limits before the municipal reform in the 1970s. Only the villages of the same name belong to the former communities of Hogschür and Rütte. The villages Hornberg and Obergebisbach and the hamlet of Atdorf belong to the former municipality of Hornberg. The village of Niedergebisbach, the Maierhöfe homestead and the houses in the Murgtal valley belong to the former municipality of Niedergebisbach. The villages of Wehrhalden, Giersbach and Kleinherrischwand, the Lochhäuser settlement and the Klaffenbach houses belong to the former municipality of Wehrhalden. In the area of the former municipality of Großherrischwand lies the village of Schellenberg, which is now part of Großherrischwand.

The formerly independent, incorporated municipalities are localities within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code, each with its own local council and local councilor as its chairman.

Neighboring communities

The community borders in the north on Todtmoos and Ibach , in the east on Görwihl , in the south on Rickenbach , in the west on the city of Wehr and in the north-west on the district of Gersbach in the town of Schopfheim in the district of Lörrach .

history

Herrischried entrance

Until 1376, the lords of Wieladingen were the local lords who they exercised as the Meier of the Säckingen women's monastery . The lower jurisdiction then fell back to the women's monastery until it came to Vorderösterreich in 1783 , which already had high jurisdiction and sovereignty. Within the front of Austria, Herrischried belonged to the unification of Görwihl in the county of Hauenstein , which in turn belonged to the Oberamt Breisgau . It was not until April 1806 that Herrischried actually came to what was then the Electorate of Baden along with the Breisgau in front of Austria and was assigned to the Säckingen district office .

Incorporations

As part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg on January 1, 1973, the previously independent municipalities of Hogschür, Niedergebisbach, Rütte and Wehrhalden were incorporated. Großherrischwand and Hornberg were incorporated on July 1, 1974.

religion

Due to its historical affiliation to Catholic Front Austria , the majority of the population is still Catholic and is looked after by the parish of Hotzenwald St. Wendelinus . In addition to the Catholic Church of St. Zeno in Herrischried, the parish in the area of Herrischried has chapels in Giersbach, Hogschür, Niedergebisbach, Großherrischwand and the Ödlandkapelle.

The few Evangelicals are looked after by the Murg-Rickenbach-Herrischried Evangelical Church Community , which maintains a church in Herrischried.

The coat of arms of the old municipality Herrischried was designed in 1905 by the General State Archives Karlsruhe , whereby the former seal image of the municipality was placed in a shield. The blazon of the coat of arms reads: "In silver on a green shield base a green fir tree, on which a red stag rises on both sides." The fir tree indicates that it belonged to the county of Hauenstein, the deer symbolize the former wealth of game in the area. The coat of arms of the old Herrischried community also became the coat of arms of the new overall community.

z'Herischried in the forest.

Buildings

The Gugelturm
Gugel tower

On the Gugel, northeast of the core village, in the district of Wehrhalden, the Gugelturm stands at a height of 996 meters. It rises 30 meters and has a viewing platform at 16 meters. The first - much smaller - Gugelturm was inaugurated in 1930 and demolished in 1971 by British pioneer troops to make way for a new building. The Black Forest Association had the new tower built in 1971–1974. The Herrenschrieder Black Forest Association also operates a hut with catering at the Gugelturm. The tower was given the nickname "New Hotz" .

Wasteland Chapel

To the west of the core village and near the Hornberg basin stands the Ödlandkapelle at an altitude of 1026 meters. The forerunner of this pilgrimage chapel was built in 1780 by the Bergalinger farmers as a thank you for being spared the rinderpest. After it burned down in 1894, the foundation stone for the new chapel was laid in 1897.

The path of destiny of the Banat Swabians leads from the Catholic parish church of St. Zeno to the wasteland chapel . The fate of the Banat Swabians is recorded on several memorial stones, who settled parts of Romania in the 18th century and some of them came from the Hotzenwald.
