geography

Geographical location

With its southern part of the municipality (Brennet), Wehr is located directly on the Upper Rhine , while the eponymous core town is located about five to six kilometers north of the Upper Rhine on its right tributary, the Wehra . The southernmost part of the Black Forest rises to the north and east of Wehr . The Dinkelberg begins to the west of Wehr . The settlement area extends from the core town, which is located directly at the exit of the Wehra from the Black Forest, southwards, along the lower Wehra, via Öflingen to Brennet am Rhein, which forms the border with Switzerland here.

Wehr is connected to Schopfheim to the west via the Eichener Höhe and to Bad Säckingen to the south . North-east up the Wehra you get to the Wehrastausee and continue through the deeply cut and wild Wehratal to Todtmoos .

In Brennet, Wehr has a connection to the railway line and the parallel B 34 from Basel to Singen .

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities of Wehr are Hasel and Schopfheim in the north, Herrischried in the northeast, Rickenbach in the east, Bad Säckingen in the southeast, Wallbach (Switzerland) in the south, Möhlin (Switzerland) in the southwest, Schwörstadt in the west and again Schopfheim in the northwest.

City structure

Coat of arms of Öflingen

The two districts of Öflingen (officially Wehr-Öflingen) and Wehr are spatially identical to the earlier communities of the same name. They form residential districts in the sense of the false choice of suburbs according to the Baden-Württemberg municipal code .

The Öflingen district includes the village of Öflingen (Ober- and Mitteldorf), the district of Brennet and the hamlet of Günnenbach. The Wehr district includes the town of Wehr, the Meierhof homestead and the houses Auf Steig, Hemmet, Im Juch, Kreuzmatt and Ochsenmatt.

The Wüstungen Wyhler and Obere Wyhler are located in the Öflingen district . The towns of Enkendorf and Flienken have risen up in Wehr, and the ruins of Bärenfels or Steinegg and the Steinegghöfe are also in the Wehr district.

history

Wehr was first mentioned in a document by Adalgötz von Werrach in 1092, and in 1363 the place received market rights. Before the frontier Austrian rule, Wehr was owned by the Schönauers who built the castles of Steinegg and Werrach as well as the two castles that currently house the town hall. From the 13th century until 1805, Wehr belonged to Upper Austria .

There was already a highly developed iron production in the Middle Ages, which continued into the 19th century. The basis for this was charcoal from the Black Forest and hydropower, which was abundant in the Wehratal. The ores came from the neighboring Fricktal on the left bank of the Rhine . Textile industry settled down later . During the Second World War , Wehr became the headquarters of Ciba ( Novartis ), which remains true to its location to this day.

Catholic Church of St. Martin

In 1950 Wehr received city rights. The previously independent community of Öflingen was incorporated on January 1, 1972 as part of the community reform.

In 1997 the Baden-Württemberg Home Days took place in Wehr and neighboring Bad Säckingen .
