history

Wittlisberg Chapel of St. Anna
Spa and sports house
Parish Church of St. Fridolin

The nucleus of houses was the Wittlisberger Hof as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Wittlisberg at Gießbacher Kopf (1087 m above sea level), which was first mentioned in 1087 and later belonged to the Allerheiligen monastery in Schaffhausen as the Bruderhof . In the course of time, further courtyards were added at the foot of the mountain, which then formed the village of Häuser, whose place name was first mentioned in 1248 by the knight Wernherr von Häuser. From the beginning there was a close connection between the settlement and the St. Blasien Monastery , which was only a good three kilometers away. With the secularization of the monastery, the community came to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806 and the Wittlisberger Hof was demolished in 1813 after it was bought by the community.

politics

Administrative association

The community has been part of the St. Blasien local authority association with its seat in St. Blasien since 1975 .

Municipal council

The municipal council in houses has 10 members. It consists of the voluntary councilors and the mayor as chairman. The mayor is entitled to vote in the municipal council. In the local elections on May 26, 2019, the local council was elected by majority vote. Majority voting takes place if no or only one nomination has been submitted. The applicants with the highest number of votes are then elected. The turnout was 63.6% (2014: 66.9%).

Partnerships

The partner community has been the health resort Hartha since 1990 , today part of the town of Tharandt in Saxony .

Attractions

The St. Anna Chapel, built in 1995 on the deserted area of the former Wittlisberger Hof, above the village, with a Way of the Cross , has become a popular excursion destination, regardless of the season . A Kneipp facility, a barefoot or sports path and a playground are all in the vicinity.

The community also has a ski lift, which has been in operation for over 35 years despite the difficult snow conditions in the southern Black Forest, a mini golf course and a combined spa and sports center and a small spa park.

Forest swimming pool

The Waldfreibad Häuser-Höchenschwand is an open-air swimming pool located in the forest between Häuser and Höchenschwand. At 971 m above sea level, the forest outdoor pool is the highest heated 50 m outdoor pool in Germany. Since 2005, the pool has been operated by a specially founded private association .

The heated outdoor forest swimming pool in the municipalities of Häuser and Höchenschwand was built in 1974. The special purpose association “Center for Sport, Leisure, Movement and Recreation Therapy in Houses / Höchenschwand” was founded to operate the pool. During the peak of tourism and the municipal finances at that time , the company building and the water area of the swimming pool were designed very generously. The community of Häuser was 40 percent and the community of Höchenschwand 60 percent of the pool.

However, in times of falling trade tax and spa income, the running costs of the pool quickly exceeded the financial possibilities of the two communities. In 1992 an expert opinion on the cost situation of the bath was drawn up and some measures to reduce costs were implemented. The energy requirement could be reduced through new technology and solar use and the water surface was also reduced as part of a basin renovation . Despite this, the municipalities could no longer cope with the operation of the pool with an annual loss of around 170,000 euros. In addition, the bathroom was increasingly in need of renovation, especially the filter system and the pipes . A private investor had to be found and a decision had to be made as to the form in which the pool could continue to be operated, for example in the form of a nature adventure pool. In a referendum on January 15, 2004, however, a clear majority of the citizens voted in favor of maintaining the existing pool and against converting it into an adventure pool. After another year of losses, the municipality of Höchenschwand announced on December 7, 2004 that it was not ready to continue running the pool in its previous form.

As early as November 2004, a citizens' initiative to save the forest swimming pool had come together. On March 17, 2005, the association Friends of Waldfreibad eV was founded out of this citizens' initiative, chaired by Rainer Schwinkendorf, an electrician from houses. The association was supposed to prevent the closure of the forest pool through subsidies , but also through active assistance in the pool operation. Just two months after it was founded, the association had more than 200 members, who together got the pool in good condition in time for the beginning of the 2005 swimming season.

The forest swimming pool was reopened on May 26, 2005. In the first few days after the reopening, the bath was able to report record visitor numbers. With the reopening, the association bought the forest open-air swimming pool, including a 3- hectare property, from the municipalities of Häuser and Höchenschwand for a symbolic price of one euro , on the condition that it would not be allowed to resell it. Since then, the association has been running the forest outdoor pool on its own. The purchase of an outdoor swimming pool by an association in order to save it from closure is to be regarded as unique in Germany, despite the many swimming pool sponsoring associations. The purchase contract was signed on July 18, 2005 and the key to the pool was symbolically handed over to the new operator by the mayors of both communities. The Zweckverband, which had not been able to make a profit in 30 years as the operator of the pool, was dissolved.

The outdoor forest pool has enjoyed great popularity since it opened. At the end of the first bathing season , more than six times as many annual tickets were sold as in previous years. In the 2006 bathing season (May 25 to September 17, 2006) a total of 24,745 visitors were counted. The forest open-air swimming pool could not be operated entirely without community subsidies in recent years, but the annual loss for the communities was more than halved under the new owners.

The pool has a heated 50 m lap pool , a non-swimmer area , a water slide , a heated lounge area, a beach volleyball court built in 2006 and a bistro .

Regular events

As in large parts of the Black Forest, Carnival ("Fasnacht") is also celebrated in houses with a large wagon builder parade with Guggen musicians and foot groups, which takes place annually on Shrove Sunday. On the Sunday following March 6th, the patron saint of houses, St. Fridolin, thought. The local associations - traditional costume band, volunteer fire brigade and local history association - go to church in traditional costume and with music. In the evening there is the Fridolin concert by the traditional costume band of Häuser. The “Maihock” takes place in houses on the Saturday before May 1st. Five local couples set up the maypole in the spa garden. On May 1st the "May blowing" takes place. The traditional band parade through the village with marching music and serenades all parts of the village. Around July 26th there has been the “Annafest” at the Wittlisberger Kapelle since 1996, the excellent young musicians of the traditional costume band frame the festival in honor of St. Anna musically. The “Grüezi Switzerland” weekend takes place in August, with which houses celebrate the Swiss national holiday. An extensive supporting program from concerts to woodcutter competition in the spa garden make the “Grüezi-Switzerland” friendship week attractive for residents, visitors from the region and tourists. Every year on December 23rd, the forest Christmas takes place at the Wittlisberg Chapel, which is accompanied by the young musicians of the traditional costume band Häuser and the Heimatverein Häuser, who perform a small nativity play. Traditionally, on Boxing Day there is a Christmas concert by local music groups.

economy

The formerly agricultural community now lives mainly from local industry, such as the local Schluchseewerk (see below), private craft businesses or the Schmidt company in St. Blasien.

Tourism has lost some of its importance in recent years. Houses experienced the last "boom" at the beginning of the 90s, which was due to the fact that many citizens of the former GDR visited the Black Forest after the fall of the Wall and houses and their immediate surroundings were considered relatively snow-sure. Today the place benefits above all from its central location in the Upper Black Forest with good transport links and proximity to Switzerland , which has a positive effect on tourism. Known beyond the region and popular with gourmet tourists, is the houses for the oldest star restaurant in Germany. As the only restaurant in Germany, the Adler in Häuser restaurant has been consistently awarded one star in the Michelin Guide since 1966.

The Schwarzabruck reservoir and the Häuser pumped storage power station are also located in the district , in whose turbines the water from the Schluchsee lake, 200 meters higher, does its work. Both are part of the Schluchseewerke AG pumped storage network .

The Häuser pumped storage power plant with its upper Schluchsee basin is Germany's largest energy storage facility. The use of the upper basin by tourism is exemplary.

traffic

Houses is on the B 500 , which leads from Titisee-Neustadt via Seebrugg and Häuser to the district town of Waldshut-Tiengen . The state road 149 connects houses with St. Blasien and other district roads provide the connection to the neighboring towns. The next train stations are in Seebrugg and Waldshut .

The community of houses has a town hall with post office and tourist information, a primary school, fire station, spa and sports center as well as a building yard and sewage treatment plant.
