The Wehratalsperre is a dam of the Wehra near Wehr in the district of Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg . As the lower basin of the Hornberg level ( Wehr power plant ), it is part of the Schluchseewerk . The upper basin of the pumped storage power plant is the Hornberg basin ; the cavern with the power plant is located in the mountain about halfway between the upper and lower basins.
The Wehra drains from the reservoir via an inlet structure through a tunnel in the slope to the east of the barrier structure . Initially, the hydropower was not used to generate electricity . Between 1998 and 2000 an additional small hydropower plant with an Ossberger turbine was installed. This has a maximum output of 1,135 MW. The height of fall varies between 16 and 36 meters depending on the water level in the reservoir. The average height of fall is 29 meters.
The barrier structure of the Wehratalsperre is a dam made of loose stone material with an asphalt concrete exterior seal. It was built from 1971 to 1974 and commissioned in 1975. A second tunnel west of the dam serves to relieve the flood .
There is a pre-lock at the dam root .
