Bernhard Eisel (born February 17, 1981 in Voitsberg ) is a former Austrian cyclist .

Career

Bernhard Eisel became a professional with the Mapei cycling team in 2001 . In 2006, he finished fourth in the Paris-Roubaix cobblestone race , a monument to cycling .

After the native of Styria in 2007 the UCI ProTeam T-Mobile joined, he became one of the most important helpers in the sprint train of Mark Cavendish , with which he jumped in the following years in different teams. He achieved his greatest individual success at the classic Gent-Wevelgem , which he won in 2010 in a sprint of a six-person leading group.

Outside of active cycling, Eisel is involved in the professional cycling association Cyclistes Professionnels Associés .

In September 2017, the electoral candidate was elected to the UCI Athletes Commission.

In April 2018, Bernhard Eisel had to undergo surgery because of a brain hemorrhage. It was suspected that it was a long-term consequence of a serious fall in the Tirreno-Adriatico stage race in mid-March. However, he returned to cycling just a few months later and took part in the Tour of Poland.

In January 2020 Eisel announced his retirement as a racing cyclist.

Bernhard Eisel lives with his wife Tanja Eisel in Carinthia and is a father of three.

In 2006, 2010 and 2011 Eisel was voted “ Cyclist of the Year ” in Austria .
