Benjo Maso
Benjo Maso (born November 3, 1944 in The Hague ) is a Dutch sociologist who is known for his books on cycling from a sociological and historical perspective.
From 1970 onwards, Benjo Maso worked primarily as a translator and translated books from French, including works by Georges Simenon and Eugène Ionesco , into Dutch . He then studied sociology and received his doctorate in 2010 on the subject of Het ontstaan van de hoofsehlede. De ontwikkeling van fin'amors 1060–1230 ( The origin of courtly love. The development of fin'amors 1060–1230 ).
From 1990 onwards, Maso, who comes from a cycling enthusiastic family, also published books on cycling, including the titles The Sweat of the Gods and We Were Gods , in which he critically examines the structures in cycling. In 2003 he was also involved in the production of the documentary Tour des légends about the Tour de France 1948 .
The peculiarity of his books, which are considered classics of cycling literature, lies in the "collaboration of cycling fan Benjo Maso with sociologist Benjo Maso," according to one review . Sweat of the Gods was listed in 2015 by the journalists of the British newspaper The Telegraph among the 50 best sports books “ever written”.
