Lucien Pothier
Lucien Pothier (born January 15, 1883 in Cuy , † April 29, 1957 in Troyes ) was a French cyclist.
As a butcher's apprentice , Lucien Pother delivered orders by bicycle; after finishing his apprenticeship he started cycling. He was active as a cyclist from 1903 to 1921. During these years he competed in the Tour de France seven times . His best placement was second place in the first edition in 1903 . For this achievement, the trained butcher Pothier was presented with a gold medal by his guild .
In his tour Participation in 1904 Pothier was together with the brothers Garin and Hippolyte Aucouturier disqualified . He was personally accused of having completed parts of the route by car or even by train . The French cycling federation UVF banned him for life, but this ban was later reduced to three years. In 1910 he finished 28th, 1911 20th and in 1921 , in his last active year, he finished 32nd on the Tour.
In 1904 Pothier was third at Paris – Roubaix . In the same year his participation in Bordeaux-Paris was planned, but he is said to have visited the hotel's own wine cellar with his teammate François Faber the evening before the start and therefore had to give up the race in Angoulême the next day . This is what the author Pascal Leroy reports in his book about Faber from 2006.
After the end of his cycling career, Pothier settled in Troyes and opened the Café Au Tour de France there . In his hometown Cuy, where he is buried, the central square was named after Lucien Pothier.
