Romain Maes

Romain Maes (born August 10, 1912 in Zerkegem , † February 22, 1983 in Groot-Bijgaarden ) was a Belgian cyclist who won the Tour de France in 1935 . There is no relationship to Sylvère Maes , the Belgian Tour de France winner of 1936 and 1939 .

Career

Maes began his professional career in 1933 and won the Circuit de l'Ouest that same year. He finished third in the Paris – Dunkirk race. In 1934 Maes achieved a stage win each at the Circuit de l'Ouest and Paris – Nice , at the Tour de France he was twice second in a stage before he broke off the tour.

In 1935, Maes won the first stage of the Tour de France and received the yellow jersey . He won two more stages and kept the yellow jersey until the finish in Paris. In the end, Maes was almost eighteen minutes ahead of second-placed Italian Ambrogio Morelli . It was to be the only tour of France where Maes reached the destination. In addition to the Tour de France, Maes also won the Paris – Lille race in 1935 and a criterion in Tournai.

In 1936 Maes won the Circuit de Paris and finished second at Paris – Roubaix . In 1937 Maes was second at the Grand Prix in Condroz, in 1938 he also took second place at Paris-Brussels. In 1939 Maes won an individual time trial in the Tour de France, won a smaller tour and took second place in the Tour of Flanders behind Albert Sercu , Patrick Sercu's father .

In 1942, in the middle of World War II, Romain Maes won two bike races and one stage of a tour. After the war, Maes was not active again.
