The Hulene landfill , port. Lixeira de Hulene , is the only inner-city landfill in the Mozambican capital, Maputo . The landfill operated by the City of Maputo is located in the district of Hulene B in the KaMavota city ​​district , directly adjacent to Avenida Julius Nyerere .

The landfill site was created during colonial times , although it was still outside the urban development limits. With the rapid (and unplanned) urbanization of Maputo since 1975, the landfill has now been completely rebuilt. In the course of the city's strong growth, the amount of waste at the city's only landfill is also increasing rapidly. For several years now, Maputo's city council has been promising to close the landfill, and there were first plans to close the landfill in 2004. In April 2015, it was stated that the closure would not be possible until 2018 at the earliest. A landfill for Maputo and Matola near Matlhemele is to be created as a replacement . A project announced in 2013 with the South Korean Export-Import Bank of Korea in the amount of 48.62 million dollars has not yet materialized.

The stored in the landfill waste are partly as highly toxic. NGOs complain that the residents around the landfill site suffer from numerous diseases due to the garbage. In addition, between 200 and 700 people also live on the landfill to collect, recycle and sell leftovers. These suffer u. a. of malaria , cholera and respiratory problems.

After heavy rains in February 2018, the mountains of rubbish on the landfill landed a landslide, and 17 people were buried under the masses of rubbish. The media then criticized the Maputo city council for failing to build the landfill.
