Detlev Beier

Detlev Beier (born August 30, 1957 in Lüneburg ; † June 18, 2016 ) was a German jazz bassist .

Live and act

Beier started playing the double bass at the age of 15 . After studying classical music in Hamburg , Beier first worked in Joe Viera's sextet from 1978 , then with Uli Beckerhoff from 1980 , as well as in groups led by Rolf and Joachim Kühn , but also with Wolfgang Engstfeld .

He founded the Hamburg Jazz Quartet with Vladislav Sendecki , Gerry Brown and Ingolf Burkhardt . In addition, there was cooperation u. a. with Michel Portal , Michel Petrucciani , Christof Lauer , Benny Bailey , Nils Landgren , Daniel Humair , Trilok Gurtu , Mark Nauseef , Steve Gadd , John Scofield , Cassandra Wilson , Eartha Kitt , Didier Lockwood , Richie Beirach , David Torn , Jasmin Tabatabai and Enrico Rava . Beier was the ideal companion on both the double bass and the electric bass and is documented on numerous records and CDs.

He also worked as a lecturer in the popular music course at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . From October 2000 he was a professor at the University of the Arts in Bremen .
