Bastian Stein (* 1983 in Heidelberg ) is a German jazz musician and composer. He plays the trumpet and flugelhorn .

Life

Stein was born as a son into a family of artists and musicians. He moved to Vienna with his mother at the age of five and has lived in Cologne since 2013 . At the age of ten, Stein was allowed to attend the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna as a guest auditor . At the age of fifteen he began his trumpet studies there. He then studied at the Jazz Conservatory in Amsterdam . In 2005 he was awarded the Hans Koller Prize and received a scholarship in New York, which was followed by three to four years of private tuition with the renowned trumpet teacher Bo Nilsson from 2006 .

Between 2003 and 2005 Stein played in many formations, some of them internationally known, such as the Bundesjazzorchester under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer , with whom he toured through Central and Eastern Europe. After that he quickly became an integral part of the Austrian jazz scene, taking part in the Joris Dudli Sextet, in the Martin Reiter Octet , in the Robert Bachner Big Band and in Gina Schwarz Jazzista .

In 2010 Stein released his debut album Grounded with his formation Gravity Point . In 2013 he released his second album Diegesis ( Pirouet ). In addition to Stein, both albums feature Pablo Held , piano, Matthias Pichler , bass and Tobias Backhaus , drums; The singer Angela Reisinger is also involved in the first album . On the album Viktor (2016) he played in a quartet with Johannes Enders , Phil Donkin and James Maddren .

In addition to his own projects such as the Bastian Stein Group and Bastian Stein's Gravity Point , he toured Europe with the Bastian Stein / Jure Pukl Crossfront formation in 2011. In 2013 he was sent to the EBU's European Jazz Orchestra as an Austrian member , and in recent years he has performed increasingly with the WDR Big Band , as well as the HR Big Band and the NDR Big Band .

Stein has been teaching jazz trumpet at the Stuttgart University of Music since 2016 .

Bastian Stein is considered one of the most successful young jazz musicians in Austria. He skilfully moves at the interfaces between the various forms of modern jazz. With his multi-layered play, Stein combines the areas of composition and improvisation with one another and creates a melody-emphasized sound language that, despite its complex structure, never seems top-heavy and bulky.

Clear lines and chamber music-inspired passages with classical passages are some of the components with which Stein and his fellow musicians interpret their music. Freddie Hubbard , Woody Shaw , Chet Baker are his great role models, with whom he has dealt intensively in addition to classical music.
