Dieter Birnbaum

Dieter Birnbaum (born December 21, 1931 in Stralsund ) is a professor emeritus for biology and former rector of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

Life

The son of a typesetter attended the Goethe High School in Demmin and graduated from high school in 1951.

In 1950 he joined the SED and in 1951/1952 was a candidate for teaching at the central school in Tentzerow .

From 1952 to 1957 Birnbaum studied biology at the University of Greifswald and was then an aspirant at the Phytopathological Institute until 1960 . His first doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. He obtained it in 1960. In 1960/1961 he was a full-time party secretary at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Then he completed an additional course of studies at the Biochemical Institute of Lomonossow University in Moscow until 1962 . After his return he was a habilitation candidate until 1966, then until 1971 scientific assistant or senior assistant at the Botanical Institute of the University of Greifswald. In 1971 he completed his habilitation and then taught until 1973 as a lecturer in biochemistry in the biology section.

From 1973 to 1977 he was the full-time secretary of the university party leadership responsible for the mathematics and natural sciences faculty. During this time, and later also as rector, he continued to hold the weekly four-hour main lecture in biochemistry. In 1977 he became a full professor of biochemistry in Greifswald. In 1978 he took over the directorate of the Biology Section.

From November 1979 to November 1985 he was rector of the University of Greifswald. In 1986 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit . Until 1990 he headed the chair for biochemistry and molecular biology at the university. In addition, he was deputy chairman of the Central Working Group on Biotechnology and the Scientific Advisory Board for Biology at the Ministry of Higher Education and Technical Education from 1986 to 1989.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990 he was freely elected director of the Institute for Biochemistry and Chairman of the College of Biology at the University of Greifswald. In 1991 he was dismissed from the civil service by mutual agreement by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Ministry of Culture.
