Werner Imig

Werner Imig (born March 21, 1920 in Wülfrath , † July 30, 1988 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Marxist historian . From 1965 to 1970 he was director of the Institute for Marxism-Leninism at the University of Greifswald and then rector of the university until 1979.

Life

Imig was born the son of a school principal. He was a member of the Hitler Youth and was registered there in 1938 as a candidate for the NSDAP . and became an officer in World War II . He was a participant in the Battle of Stalingrad . While in Soviet captivity, he attended several Antifa schools .

In 1948 he returned to Germany, where he became a member of the SED in February 1949 . In the same year he became a lecturer in the history of the labor movement at the German Administrative Academy in Forst Zinna and later at its successor, the German Academy for Political Science and Law (DVA) . In 1951 he passed the state examination at the Faculty of Political Science and Law at the DVA. From 1953 to 1962 he was Vice Rector of the Academy and at the same time completed a distance learning course at the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences . It was in 1956 with a thesis on the workers' strike at Mansfeld 1930 doctorate . Then he was head of the chair for history of the CPSU there . In 1963 he became a lecturer and in 1969 a full professor for the history of the labor movement at the Institute for Marxism-Leninism at the University of Greifswald. From 1965 to 1970 he was director of the institute and then rector of the university until 1979. There he led a working group on university history. In 1977 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.
