Hans-Christoph Rauh (born July 10, 1939 in Brandenburg / Havel ) is a German philosopher . He taught at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the University of Greifswald . His subjects were epistemology , ontology and the history of philosophy . Since the late 1980s he has been researching and publishing on the historical and critical reappraisal of the GDR philosophy .

Live and act

Rauh is the son of a Protestant pastor who belonged to the Confessing Church during the Nazi era . After fleeing the war over the Oder in 1945, the family lived first in the Neuruppin district and from 1954 in Berlin . In 1959 he graduated from high school and then studied philosophy (with a minor in natural sciences) at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

1964–1968 Rauh worked as a scientific assistant in the department (chair) logic and epistemology (headed by Georg Klaus and Dieter Wittich ); In 1969 he received his doctorate “On the problem of 'wrong reflection' with Marx. A contribution to the history, content and function of the Marxist concept of ideology ”; This was followed by several years of specialist philosophical teaching on epistemology, its history and systematics at the Institute for Philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin, renamed the Marxist-Leninist Philosophy section from 1968.

In 1978 he completed his habilitation ( doctorate B ) on the subject of "Epistemology as a criticism of ideology" and was appointed ministerial university lecturer. 1978–1982 he came to the "practical use" of the German magazine for philosophy (DZfPh), the only philosophy magazine in the GDR , which he headed as editor-in-chief. In connection with the " Peter Ruben Affair ", an allegedly revisionist group of philosophers at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , whose article Rauh published in the German Journal of Philosophy, Rauh was deposed as editor-in-chief by the Central Committee Sciences. An additional reason was the one-time quotation of the Old Testament Bible word "forbidden" in the GDR " swords to plowshares" in an article in the magazine, which was picked up by Western media. The dismissal resulted in years of teaching and publication restrictions as well as a transfer and appointment as professor for dialectical materialism (epistemology) in the distance learning philosophy at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University Greifswald in 1986. From 1987–1990 he was director of the Institute for Philosophy, the smallest philosophy institute in the GDR.

He litigated successfully against the liquidation of the institute at the end of 1990, also in the interests of some employees, which resulted in an equal (east / west) renewal of the institute for philosophy. After his own positive professional evaluation, political review ("Honorary Commission") and the "Gauckbescheid", the university continued to work as HRG professor in 1993, employing a research assistant for philosophical teaching at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald up to the regular Retired in 2004. He then received teaching positions in philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Since 1996, Rauh has initiated various (partly joint) projects for the comprehensive historical-critical reappraisal of GDR philosophy 1945–95, for which a multi-volume series of publications is being published by Ch. Links Verlag Berlin.

Rauh lives and works in Berlin-Pankow , is married and has two sons.
