history
The Stadtsparkasse Hameln was founded on September 4th, 1835. The first public suggestion for the establishment of a savings bank in the city of Hameln came in 1823 from the senior club . Until 1887 it was in the old Hamelin town hall. In order to gain the trust of Hamelin's citizens, the Stadtsparkasse was initially part of the city treasury, both spatially and commercially . A chest from the 16th century served the finance department as a city and savings bank. In it she kept the city's money like the savings of the Hamelin citizens. In 1869 the savings bank and the finance bank were separated. The Sparkasse became an independent financial institution and was given its own room on the ground floor of the town hall. In 1887, the Stadtsparkasse moved its business premises from the old town hall to the representative wedding house , a building in the late Renaissance style, which wealthy Hamelin citizens had built as a festival and celebration house from 1610 to 1617. A “thief-proof and fire-proof vault” was built into the building.
In 1922 an incumbent mayor of the city, Mayor Scharnow, took over the chairmanship of the administrative board of the Sparkasse for the first time. Since then this has been maintained. In 1928 the savings bank operations were reorganized and the bookkeeping switched to machine operation.
In the 1930s, the Stadtsparkasse grew strongly and moved into the “Old Garrison Church” / “Heiliggeiststift” building group. The 18th century buildings were rebuilt. The fact that the financial institute moved into a former church heated people's hearts across the country.
After the Second World War and the subsequent currency reform , saving was initially not very popular. At the end of 1951 the savings deposits amounted to 9.2 million DM compared to 3.3 million DM in 1948. In the 1950s, the savings bank grew again and therefore began to set up branches . Nevertheless, there was still a shortage of space in the "Old Garrison Church". For this reason, in 1952 the former city hall on the first floor was incorporated into the business premises of the Sparkasse. In 1964, 1978, 1987–1993 and 1998–2001 further extensions, conversions and new constructions were carried out at the main office.
