Project CARS ( Community Assisted Racing Simulator ) is a racing simulation from Slightly Mad Studios. It was released for Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 7, 2015. The game is financed entirely by the community and the developer.
With Project CARS 2 , the second part of the series appeared in 2017.
development
After the development of Need for Speed: Shift and its successor Shift 2: Unleashed for Electronic Arts , Slightly Mad Studios set out to create a race simulation based on the wishes of the. By means of a specially founded crowdfunding portal ( World of Mass Development , WMD for short ) Developer and the community that supports the financing. In addition to individual races (Race, Qualifying, Time Trial, Free Practice) and a multiplayer mode, the game should above all include an extensive career mode in which you can work your way up from the go-kart to the Formula 1 cockpit. Around 40% of the originally budgeted budget came from the developer himself. In addition to being independent from a publisher , this gave the developer the opportunity to involve his supporters and fan community in the development process throughout the entire development process.
Supporters were given the opportunity to purchase so-called tool packs . Depending on the amount of financial support, the supporter received more permissions and access to exclusive content. For example, Slightly Mad released a new development version of the game (build) every working day . Owners of the smallest tool pack only had access to a build once a month, and for the next larger tool pack every week. By registering in the developer forum on WMD, supporters were able to give feedback on bugs or the general direction of the game and, by participating in surveys, influence the further direction of development. After the title appears, every user participates in the success, again depending on the amount wagered.
At the end of May 2015, lead developer Ian Bell announced in the company's forum that he had problems implementing the Wii U. Among other things, it is not possible to stabilize the frame rate above 23 frames per second ( fps ) at a resolution of 720p . It should be decided whether the porting for the Wii U will be retained or whether Nintendo will present a successor console at the E3 2015 trade fair . On July 21, 2015, the developer announced that development and thus the Wii-U version of the game had been discontinued.
technology
The PS4 calculates the game in a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. On the Xbox, a resolution of 1600 × 900 pixels is used, which is then simply upscaled to 1080p . Both versions work with EQAA ( MSAA with additional coverage samples). In addition, temporal antialiasing is used on PS4 , which further reduces edge flickering in motion, but in combination with the motion blur used can cause slight ghosting . The frame rate is up to 60 frames per second. On average, however, the PS4 achieves higher frame rates than Xbox.
