The Corvette Stingray (C7) is the successor model to the Corvette C6 sports car from General Motors , which was discontinued in early 2013 . A concept study "Corvette C7 Stingray Concept" was presented to the public in late February 2009 at the Chicago Auto Show. In January 2012, the first Erlkönig photos of the new generation became known. Chevrolet refers to the model in the USA as " Chevrolet 2014 Corvette Stingray ". The official name for Europe is Corvette Stingray , and Chevrolet also sometimes calls Corvette Stingray 2014 .
The Corvette C7 was unveiled to the public on January 13, 2013 (the night before the Detroit Auto Show opened ); The announcement that the new Corvette will bear the nickname “Stingray”, which has not been used for over 30 years, caused a great surprise.
The car was launched in Europe in December 2013. Selling prices started at € 69,990.
body
The chassis of the Corvette Stingray C7 consists of aluminum and magnesium components and is said to be 49 kilograms lighter than that of its predecessor. The body is made of plastic, many of which are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (KFK, "carbon").
Good weight management enables a 50:50 weight distribution between the two axles; This is ensured, for example, by the engine hood made of KFK as standard and the Targa roof, which, like the previous versions, can be removed.
drive
Instead of the originally planned mid-engine , the Corvette Stingray C7 - like its predecessor - has a conventional front engine with rear-wheel drive and a gearbox ( transaxle ) built into the rear for better weight distribution . The basic version of the C7 will have the 6.2 liter LT1 engine presented in 2012, which can develop a maximum torque of 630 Nm and deliver 343 kW (466 hp) - making the C7 the most powerful basic Corvette that has ever existed. The LT1 engine is the first engine in the new 5th generation of GM's small block engines; it combines various technologies such as direct injection , cylinder deactivation and variable valve control . This also allows a reduction in gasoline consumption, which means that the C7 consumes 12 liters as a coupe and 12.2 liters as a convertible according to the NEDC. A special sound engineering system is being used for the first time in the Corvette Stingray C7. When switching between eight and four-cylinder operation, Tenneco exhaust valves optimize the exhaust gas flow and regulate the exhaust noise with targeted opening and closing processes.
The Corvette is optionally available with a 7-speed manual gearbox or, since model year 2015, an 8-speed automatic gearbox with paddles on the steering wheel. Previously there was a 6-speed automatic.
The base price for the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (model year 2015) is € 79,500 for the coupé and € 84,500 for the convertible.
Special models and equipment
C7 Grand Sport
The Corvette C7 Grand Sport is located between the basic version Stingray and the C7 Z06. It has a racing-proven lightweight chassis and an aerodynamics package for better grip and better handling. The Grand Sport has dry sump lubrication, stabilizers and dampers from the Z06, brakes with slotted discs, multi-piston brake calipers at the front and rear, wider wheel arches and rims and a Grand Sport emblem.
C7 Z06
The Corvette C7 Z06 was unveiled one year after the Corvette C7 Stingray at the Detroit Auto Show on January 13, 2014. It is the fourth model in the “Z06” series after the C2 Z06 (only in 1963, 199 units were built), the C5 Z06 and the C6 Z06.
For the first time, the car has the Targa roof of the normal Corvette, with the chassis open 20% more torsion-resistant than that of the C6 Z06 with its firmly bolted roof.
The new LT4 -V8 aluminum engine has a displacement of 6.2 liters, a compressor and dry sump lubrication . According to GM , it has an output of 485 kW (650 SAE-bhp ) and generates a maximum torque of 881 Newton meters (650 lb * ft ).
The Z06 will be delivered with the manual 7-speed gearbox or a new 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Z07 performance package
The Z07 performance package is optionally available for the Grand Sport and the Z06 Coupé. It consists of larger KfK side skirts, larger end plates for the front splitter and an adjustable, transparent Gurney flap on the rear wing (only for the Z06). The result is the highest downforce that GM has measured in a production model to date. A specially tuned chassis with Magnetic Selective Ride Control ensures that the Z06 or Grand Sport retains traction even with strong lateral forces. This is also supported by the standard performance traction management and the electronic limited-slip differential. The brake system with carbon-ceramic brake discs is supplied by Brembo and is used in a similar form in endurance races. The front brake calipers have 6 pistons and the rear 4 pistons. The brake discs are about 50% lighter than corresponding gray cast iron discs.
C7 ZR1
In 2017, Chevrolet presented the Corvette C7 ZR1 as a coupe at the Dubai International Motor Show and as a convertible at the LA Auto Show . The sports car, which costs around 103,000 euros, is powered by an LT5 engine with an output of 765 hp and a torque of 969 Nm. Visually, the C7 ZR1 has been upgraded with carbon add-on parts, rear wings and air intakes, with the optionally available ZTK Performance Package, the downforce is increased by 60%. Sales began in December 2017 and the first vehicles are expected to be delivered in the USA in spring 2018. The vehicle with the chassis number 001 was auctioned for a good cause on January 19, 2018 by the auction house Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale . The proceeds were $ 925,000.

Others
From November 2012 to January 14, 2013, a camouflaged Erlkönig of the Corvette C7 with the new LT1 engine could be virtually test-driven in the PlayStation 3 game “ Gran Turismo 5 ”. Since January 15, 2013 this has been possible with the undisguised production model.
The Italian Soleil Anadi is based on the Corvette C7 and uses the drive of the Corvette C7 Z06.
