Phil Donkin

Phil Donkin (* November 1980 in Sunderland , Tyne and Wear ) is a British double bass player of modern creative jazz . He currently lives in Berlin and New York.

Live and act

Donkin first learned the electric bass at the age of twelve and played in rock bands before moving to London in 1998 and doing jazz. From 1999 to 2003 he studied classical double bass at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Colin Paris. He also played jazz bands; Charles Mingus , Dave Holland and Larry Gales were among his role models . From 2002 he was active as a professional musician in the British music scene; he played u. a. with Stan Sulzmann , Bobby Wellins , Jim Mullen , Martin Drew , Phil Lee , Julian Argüelles , Martin France , Julian Joseph , Mark Mondesir , Steve Williamson , Tim Garland , Nikki Iles , Tina May , Phil Robson , Julian Siegel , Paul Clarvis and Hans Koller .

In 2012 Donkin released his debut album Dimaxis. In the field of jazz he was involved in 13 recording sessions between 2004 and 2012, including a. with Paul Booth , Guy Barker ( The Amadeus Project 2007), Ivo Neame , Gwilym Simcock ( Perception 2007) and John Warren . In Germany he worked in the band of trombonist Ed Kröger in 2009 .

In 2010, Donkin moved to New York City, where he lived for three years, working with musicians including Ben Monder , Kevin Hays , Adam Rogers , Mark Turner , Seamus Blake , Steve Cardenas , Bruce Barth , Edward Simon and many others.

He also worked u. a. in Dhafer Youssef's Bird's Requiem and in Nils Wograms Root 70 . In addition, he plays in various formations with the pianist Rainer Böhm as well as with the saxophonist Ben Kraef . Donkin is also a member of Marius Neset 's 'Birds' Quartet, Diego Piñera 's quartet and Max von Mosch's tentet . In 2014 he played with Nils Wogram and in his own trio with Hayden Chisholm and Jochen Rückert . In July 2017 Phil Donkin founded the trio Uncanny Valley together with tenor saxophonist Tom Challenger and drummer Oliver Steidle .
