The Bessunger Knabenschule (BKS) was an elementary school in Darmstadt .

Architecture and history

From 1868, the Bessunger pupils were taught in a new school building - today's Herderschule - on the corner of Bessunger Strasse and Eichwiesenstrasse. The strong population growth in the 19th century made it necessary to build a new school building. From September 12, 1878, classes took place in the new building on Ludwigshöhstrasse. Initially, only the students were taught in the new school building. The students continued to be taught in the school building on Bessunger Strasse.

In 1888 Bessungen was incorporated into the city of Darmstadt. After that the school was officially called "Stadtknabenschule III". In the years 1902–1922 there was an alternate quarter in the former company building of the "Lautz printing works" in Herdweg.

During the Second World War , the school building served military purposes (collection point for replacement troops and weapons depot). The Bessunger boys' school is the only school building in Bessungen that survived the war unscathed.

In 1945 it was an alternative accommodation for various municipal facilities (including makeshift post office, fire brigade base, food store, housing office). From the end of 1945 to 1954, the school building served as a primary school and fire brigade base. From 1945 on, female students were also taught in the school building. In 1954 the school was renamed "Bessunger Schule".

In 1964 and 1965, additional pavilions and workrooms were built on the school premises. In 1977 the "Bessunger School" was closed. The primary school classes were moved to the new Bessunger school at Ludwigshöhstraße 10. The secondary school classes were affiliated with the Morneweg School.

From September 1978 to October 1982 the school building housed the Darmstadt Waldorf School .

Since 1983 the building has housed a socio-cultural center. The center is supported by an association. The focus of the offer is on the areas of music, theater and childcare.

Monument protection

The Bessunger Knabenschule building is the oldest surviving school building in Darmstadt. The Bessunger boys school is under monument protection for architectural and city-historical reasons .
