Martin Drew

Martin Drew (born February 11, 1944 in Northampton , † July 29, 2010 in London ) was an English jazz drummer. He was one of the most internationally known British jazz drummers.

Live and act

Drew started playing drums at the age of six and made his first professional appearances at the age of thirteen. He studied with George Fierstone and worked from 1975 to 1995 as a drummer for Ronnie Scott , where he accompanied musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald , Dizzy Gillespie , Chet Baker and Dexter Gordon . From 1974 to 2004 he was part of Oscar Peterson's combo , with whom he performed and recorded in Canada, the USA and South America, Japan, Australia and Europe, including with the Count Basie Orchestra .

Drew also led various bands of his own: the quintet Our Band with Dick Morrissey , Jim Mullen , John Critchinson and Ron Mathewson , a quartet with Mornington Lockett , Gareth Williams and Laurence Cottle and the quintet Celebrating the Jazz Couriers, founded in 2000 (with Mornington Lockett, Nigel Hitchcock , Steve Melling and Andrew Cleyndert ).
