Nigel Hitchcock (born January 4, 1971 in Rustington , England ) is a British jazz musician ( alto saxophone , flute ) and composer .

biography

Hitchcock began playing the recorder at the age of six and the alto saxophone at the age of eight. In 1982 he joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra with his older brother Clive . From 1983 he was lead alto saxophonist there for five years . During this time, the orchestra toured with Vic Damone , Buddy Greco and Al Martino . At the age of 16 he moved to London and worked as a session musician , recording television jingles , film soundtracks and pop solos .

In 1988 he was invited to the SWR New Jazz Meeting . In 1989 he became a member of the saxophone - quartet Itchy Fingers . With this band he toured Europe and Southeast Asia for 18 months . With Itchy Fingers , Hitchcock received several awards: the Schlitz Award as best newcomer, the Cleo Laine Personal Award as best young musician and the Pat Smythe Trust Award . He left the band to continue working as a studio musician and in the pop genre . In addition, he led his own band with which he recorded several albums, first Snake Ranch Sessions (2000); still he belonged to the Mask Orchestra by Colin Towns and big band of Stan Sulzmann . In 2006 he composed a classical work for an orchestra in Kazakhstan .

Hitchcock played with Tom Jones , Wet Wet Wet , Beverley Craven , Ray Charles , Robbie Williams , Karl Jenkins ( In These Stones Horizons Sing ), Incognito and Mark Knopfler , among others . He is married to the saxophonist Tini Thomsen .
