Beverley Craven (born July 28, 1963 in Colombo , Ceylon ) is a British singer and songwriter.

Life

Her parents returned to England a short time after she was born. Her mother was a violinist and through her guidance she began playing the piano at the age of seven. As a teenager she was also a successful swimmer and competed in the British championships. At the age of 19 she tried a career in London. While she was looking for a suitable band and was earning money as a waitress, she wrote her own songs.

After touring Europe with Bobby Womack as a background singer in the late 1980s , she successfully released a solo record in 1990 with the support of Simon Nicol and Dave Mattacks from Fairport Convention and producer Paul Samwell-Smith . The album named after her reached number 3 in Great Britain and stayed in the charts for a full year. The first single from it, Promise Me , also became a number 3 hit. With Woman to Woman , Beverley Craven was once able to enter the German charts. In 1992 she was voted the best British newcomer. However, while there were no further big single successes, the second album Love Scenes could still conquer number 4 in 1993. After that, no one heard from her for a long time before she returned to the charts in 1999 with the album Mixed Emotions .

She was married to the English songwriter Colin Campsie, and together the couple have three daughters Mollie (* 1992), Brenna (* 1995) and Connie (* 1996). In 2012, Beverley Craven split from Colin Campsie. In her autobiography Truth Be told , published in 2012, Beverley Craven writes in great detail about the background and about her musical career.

In 2004, Promise Me was covered by Lutricia McNeal and reached the German charts (# 86). The title also forms the basis of Scooter's single 4 AM . Another cover version was released in 2013 with Tabea.

In 2005 Craven developed breast cancer.
