Buddy Greco

Buddy Greco (born August 14, 1926 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † January 10, 2017 in Las Vegas , Nevada ; born Armando Greco ) was an American pop singer and jazz pianist .

Live and act

Greco learned to play the piano at the age of four from his father, a music critic. From 1945 to 1949 he directed his own trio; from 1949 to 1952 Benny Goodman brought him into his band as a pianist, singer and arranger. As a pianist he was attached to the bebop ; As a singer, he decided in the mid-1950s for a more commercial pace and mainly interpreted standards, including from the country area . He performed in casinos and large clubs from Las Vegas to Monte-Carlo . Together with the Beatles he played for Elizabeth II.

Greco has mainly recorded for Columbia / Epic , but also for Reprise and other independent labels. His most successful single is his version of The Lady Is a Tramp , which sold more than a million copies in the United States and was therefore awarded a gold record . In 1969 he had a major hit for the last time with the album Movin 'On . He then performed primarily at his Cathedral City club , which closed in 2009. In the early 1990s, he toured with The Salute to the Benny Goodman Band. In 2008 Greco and his wife Lezlie Anders performed in Great Britain with the BBC Big Band , but also in Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club . In April 2010 he performed live on BBC Radio 2 with the BBC Concert Orchestra and toured with the Swinging Las Vegas Legends Show .

Occasionally he was also active as an actor. He played the nightclub singer Lucky in the 1969 film The Girl Who Knew Too Much . In 1967 he was next to drummer Buddy Rich and comedian George Carlin one of the presenters in the television series Away We Go .
